Liminal means occupying a position at, or existing in the in-between state of, a threshold, boundary, or transition between two different conditions, places, or stages.
Latin Root: It comes from the Latin word limen, meaning "threshold" or doorway.
From Northern to Southern Europe, from Mesoamerica to the Philippines, from Haiti to Cambodia to India and beyond, our ancestors felt and honoured the space of liminality that opens up around the time of the midway point between autumn equinox and winter solstice. Our Celtic kin named this gateway 'Samhain', and observed how the veil between the subtle and gross worlds was thinned, and the boundaries between the seen and the unseen blurs and the mystical and otherworldly makes itself more known.
Cultures from all over the world have used this time to commune with their ancestors and unseen guides in various ways, and for the ancient Celts it was the time when the Queen of Winter, the divine hag, the ‘veiled one’ - the Cailleach, takes over the reigns from the Spring Goddess Brigid to usher the world into the deepness of night.

We will gather in circle to seek counsel from the intelligence of the descent into night, to attune to the beckoning of the void that this season summons, and to listen for the silent messengers beyond the veil. We will seek apprenticeship with the guardians of this doorway, and tend to this communion in practical and subtle ways through conversation, study, ritual technology and attunement.
